Clans of Banajiga

These are traders, merchants, agriculturists, bricklayers, carpenters, manu- facturers of glass bangles, lime-burners, musicians, and dancers. Most of the clans eat meat and drink spirits, but one of them, variously styled Balegara, Devâdiga, and Bannagar, abstains from both. Many dancing-girls of the temples are of this caste. Its clans are numerous, and are the following:-

  3. Aravattu-wokala-setti.
  4. Vaduga.
  5. Mutta Râju
  6. Devâdiga.
  7. Rajabanna.
  8. Bidâra.
  9. Pasaluvâte.
  10. Telugu Banajiga.
  11. Chiravalu.
  12. Râjabandar.
  13. Yale Banajiga.
  14. Dâsa Banajiga.
  15. Naidu
  16. Kavare.
  17. Gopatiga.

The most important of these clans are the Dâsa, Yale, and Gopatiga. Many of the women of the Naidu and Kavare clans have received some education, and are able to read and write
